SEO and digital marketing aren't the same thing, and confusing the two leads to wasted budget. Here's how they're different, and how to use both.

"SEO" and "digital marketing" get used almost interchangeably in conversation, but they're not the same thing, and treating them as one and the same leads to unrealistic expectations. SEO is one channel inside a much wider set of digital marketing activities, each with a different job to do.

What SEO actually is

Search engine optimisation is the practice of structuring and writing your website so it ranks well in organic (unpaid) search results for the terms your customers actually search for. It covers technical factors (site speed, mobile usability, clean URLs), on-page factors (headings, content, metadata) and off-page factors (backlinks, reputation). It's a long-term, compounding channel: results build over months, not days.

What digital marketing covers

  • Paid advertising (Meta Ads, Google Ads): fast, controllable traffic you pay for directly.
  • Social media marketing: building an audience and relationship over time through content.
  • Content marketing: blog posts, guides and resources (like this one) that support both SEO and audience building.
  • Email marketing and automation: nurturing people who've already shown interest.
  • SEO itself: the organic search layer sitting underneath all of the above.

Why the distinction matters

A common mistake is expecting SEO to deliver immediate results the way a paid ad campaign does, or conversely, expecting a paid campaign to build the kind of durable, compounding visibility that good SEO builds over time. They solve different problems on different timelines. A business that needs enquiries this month usually needs paid ads first; a business playing a longer game needs SEO investment alongside it.

How they work together in practice

The strongest results come from combining them: paid ads generate enquiries now while SEO-optimised content and website foundations build organic visibility that keeps paying off long after a campaign ends. Every website we build starts with SEO foundations in place (see our website design service), so that any paid or content marketing layered on top has something solid to build on rather than starting from zero.
